Why are Kenyatta and Ruto Glorifying Poverty?

Cameras on toe rehearsed moments and strategically placed individuals. In the picture, an old suffering grandmother, battered by poverty as white boogers oozes at the corner of her eyes, there is a sad reality on her face. Poverty!!

At most if not so often, she is the poster child of what level of poverty our country is in. There was a time in her youth, that she stood out and the youthfulness of her days shone like the morning star. Today Ruto our deputy president or Kenyatta our president wants to use her as a photo prop.

She is all but glad that during her time, she will have had a photo shoot opportunity with either the president or his deputy. What she is oblivious about is that her face is about to be splashed across the social media sites, ostensibly to push a narrative of humbleness.

At some point in this country we decided to turn the poverty narrative into photography props for the big men. Today when you hang out with a poverty stricken woman in her single shanty, infested with cockroaches and bedbugs, your cameras a toe, you are hailed as a humble.

We roll our eyes; government bloggers drop the pictures on their social media pages and ask you to drop a caption. What caption?!

In our effort to seem to be in touch with the common, poverty deluded Kenyan, we have gone a notch higher and made poverty cool. Poverty is not cool; poverty is not something we want to use for props. Being poor is a sin, poverty is a curse and we cannot use poverty to show how humble one is. If you have to show us and demonstrate to us that you are humble, then you miss the point.

Ruto and Kenyatta needs to stop posing besides poor Kenyans who are suffering and going hungry in the name of sending a narrative, If you are humble we will know either way.

Kenyatta and Ruto needs to take this nation to the second world class status as they promised and stop glorifying poverty, what we need are pictures of where we use to be and where we are. Not of someone drinking porridge in some dusty house and shoving it right on our face.

No one wants to live in poverty; we all want good things in life. The Jubilee administration must come to terms with the reality of poverty in this country and fix it.
